When my eyes were stabbed / 그때 반짝이는 네온 불빛이
By the flash of a neon light / 내 눈에 들어왔고
That split the night / 그 네온 불빛은 밤의 어둠을 가르며
And touched the sound of silence. / 침묵의 소리를 감싸 안았다네

And in the naked light I saw / 적나라한 불빛 가운데서 만 명 정도
Ten thousand people, / 아니 어쩌면 더 많은 사람들을
Maybe more. / 나는 볼 수 있었다네
People talking without speaking, / 그 사람들은 마음에도 없는 이야기를 하고
People hearing without listening, / 듣는 체하지만 실제로는 듣지 않고
People writing songs / 심금을 울리지도 못하는
That voices never share / 노래들을 부르고 있었다네
No one dared / 그 어느 누구도 감히
Disturb the sound of silence. / 침묵의 소리를 깨뜨릴 엄두를 내지 못했다네

"Fools" said I, / 그래서 나는 "바보들
"You do not know / 암과도 같은 침묵이 자라고 있음을
Silence like a cancer grows. / 당신들은 알지 못하나요?
Hear my words that I might teach you, / 당신들을 깨우치는 내 말을 들으세요
Take my arms / 당신들에게 내미는 내 손을 잡으세요"
That I might reach you." / 라고 말했지
But my words / 하지만 그러한 내 말은
Like silent raindrops fell, / 소리없는 빗방울처럼 떨어져
And echoed / 침묵의 샘 가운데에서
In the wells of silence. / 공허한 메아리 같을 뿐이었다네

And the people bowed and prayed / 사람들은 자기들이 만든
To the neon god they made. / 네온 신에게 허리 굽혀 기도했다네
And the sign flashed out its warning, /그러자 네온이 만들어내는 단어 중에
In the words that it was forming. / 경고의 문구가 번쩍이었지
